This role carries immense responsibility and attracts relentless scrutiny. Politically, they must perform a delicate balancing act, mediating between the radical demands of the most committed activists and the need to craft a message broad enough to attract the mass turnout that gives the event its power. They are lightning rods for criticism, from both external opponents and internal factions debating representation and strategy. Their labor is largely invisible until a problem arises.
